WHO IS MISSING? AND WHY?
Normalizations, Exclusions and Omissions in the Self Depiction of the Humboldt University.
The project
What image of science and scien_tists is produced by the exhibition of sculptures and portraits in and around the main building of Humboldt University? Which persons were selected in different historical contexts as represe_ntatives of the university and, most importantly, which were not? At which points do we* find ourselves in these representations, and again, where not? What does this say about our own positioning? These and similar questions puzzled us when we started to design „Who is missing? And why?“. For our project we have limited ourselves to those sculptures and portraits directly in and around the main building, and which name and depict persons referred to as famous scholars by the Humboldt University.
Intervention in July 2012
Beside the maps and informations in the leaflet, we’ve attached written contextualisations on some of the noted portraits and sculptures at july 17th 2012. Our concern was to inform you about the representative figures and the way they are represented, or to ask questions and to point to issues, which are not mentioned in the existing description cards by the University.

Normierungen, Ausschlüsse und Weglassungen in der Selbstdarstellung der Humboldt-Universität.
Das Projekt
Welches Bild von Wissenschaft und Wi_ssenschaftlerinnen wird durch die Ausstellung von Skulpturen und Portraits im und um das Hauptgebäude der Humboldt-Universität herum hergestellt? Welche Personen wurden in den verschiedenen historischen Kontexten als Repräsenta_ntinnen der Universität ausgewählt und, vor allem, welche nicht? An welchen Punkten finden wir* uns in diesen Repräsentationen wieder, an welchen nicht? Was sagt das über unsere eigenen Positionierungen? Solche und ähnliche Fragen haben uns beschäftigt als wir begannen „Who is missing? And why?“ zu konzipieren. Wir haben uns für unser Projekt auf jene Skulpturen und Portraits beschränkt, die sich direkt im und um das Hauptgebäude herum befinden und die Personen namentlich benennen und abbilden, die von der Uni als berühmte Gelehrte der Humboldt-Universität bezeichnet werden.
Intervention im Juli 2012
Neben den Karten und den Informationen in der Broschüre haben wir am 17.07.2012 an einigen der verzeichneten Portraits und Skulpturen Beschriftungen befestigt. Hierbei war es unser Anliegen zu den repräsentierten Persönlichkeiten und der Art wie sie präsentiert werden, zu informieren oder Fragen zu stellen und auf Sachverhalte hinzuweisen, die auf den teils vorhandenen Kontextkärtchen der Universität keine Erwähnung finden.
