Guest book originates from the private life of the artist and the changes in housing conditions related to the ongoing gentrification in the central districts of the city of Berlin. The work is a diary in shape of images of the traces of all the people that have been hosted by Rebecca in her home from June 2008 to March 2013, when she moved to another house in a different neighborhood, because in the building where she lived began renovations. The old artist’s apartment was located in the district Mitte and had an extra room, which was used as a guest room. This “superfluous” space has allowed Rebecca to host several people for longer or shorter periods. The possibility to host permitted to experience different ways of living together and sharing living space. Rebecca asked each guest to make a drawing in the guest book. The 54 drawings collected in the guest book of the apartment of Rosenthalerstr.17 were transferred onto fabric and embroidered by hand by the artist. The embroideries become a sort of anthology of the people transiting through her home and a chronicle of the past few years. |
