IMBISS KOLONIE

Il lavoro consiste nella ricostruzione parziale della piazza di Rosenthaler che ospitava gli Imbiss. Installazione sospesa di cubi di legno, filo da pesca, dimensioni variabili e 10 cartoline rappresentanti gli Imbiss e l’hotel.
A Berlino, all’angolo fra Brunnenstrasse e Weinbergsweg, in Rosenthalerplatz non c’era un hotel come oggi, ma un “buco”, l’assenza di un edificio. L’area però non era vuota poichè erano presenti in essa alcuni Imbiss. In tedesco la parola Imbiss definisce uno snack-bar, un “baracchino”, in genere in una struttura temporanea o mobile. Gli Imbiss di Rosethalerplatz potrebbero essere descritti come fatiscenti, ma di fatto sono stati il centro nervoso del quartiere, una sua peculiarità. Non so quando gli Imbiss sono arrivati nella piazza, ma so la prima volta che ne ho registrato la presenza, nel 2005 durante la mia prima visita della città.
Quando nel 2006 mi sono trasferita a Berlino vivevo in una Haus-project a pochi passi dagli Imbiss di Rosenthalerplatz. Quotidianamente ho assistito ai repentini mutamenti di questo peculiare cosmo all’interno del mutevole quartiere Mitte. Un microcosmo dai confini e dalla geografia temporanei e precari. Un angolo un pò sporco con ratti, insegne kitsch, cibo economico (ma gustoso), dalle luci invitanti nella notte, aperto 24 ore su 24, sempre pronto ad offrirti quello di cui avevi bisogno. Un microcosmo nel quartiere, con i suoi propri rituali e personaggi, dove le storie delle persone che vi lavoravano si mischiavano con chi era solo di passaggio.
Dal 2008 è iniziato il suo lento smantellamento. Gli Imbiss sono scomparsi, spostati altrove o demoliti. Pezzo dopo pezzo ogni cosa è stata rimossa per fare spazio alla costruzione di un hotel.

The work consists in the reconstruction of the corner of Rosenthalerplatz that was hosting the Imbiss, as a suspended installation of blocks of wood and fishing thread, and 10 drawings in postcard format of the Imbiss and the hotel.
At the corner between Brunnenstrasse and Weinbergsweg in Rosenthalerplatz there was not a hotel (like today) but a blank area, a hole, the absence of a building. But the area was not empty because here there were several Imbiss. In German the word Imbiss describes a snack bar, usually in a mobile or temporary construction. The Imbiss of Rosenthaler Plaz might be described as trashy, but they were the nerve centre of the area, a peculiarity of this spot. I do not know precisely for how long Rosenthalerplatz was characterize by the presence of Imbiss, or when they (the Imbiss) started to arrive there. The first time that I saw the square and I register the phenomenon was in 2005 during my first visit of Berlin.
When then in 2006 I moved to Berlin, I was used to live in a Wg in Brunnenstrasse, just a few minutes away from the Imbiss of Rosenthalerplatz. I daily witnessed the sudden and numerous changes of that peculiar cosmos inside the changeable district Mitte. A variable cosmos in it’s geography and borders, temporary and precarious. A corner set up by activities, dirt, rats, kitsch signs, cheap but tasty food, appealing light in the city night, 24 hour non-stop open, always ready to offer you what you need. A microcosmos inside the quarter, with his own ritual and characters. Where the stories of the people working there were mixed-up with the ones ofthose who were just passing by. A place that also visually contributed to the identity of the quarter itself.
From 2008 started its slow dismantling. Slowly the Imbiss disappeared, moved away or were demolished. Piece by piece everything was wrecked, dismembered, trashed to give space to a construction site for a hotel.

Das Projekt “Imbisse” besteht aus der Rekonstruktion der Ecke des Rosenthaler Platzes auf dem sich die Imbiss-Kolonie befand.
Ich weiß nicht genau, seit wann es die Imbiss-Kolonie auf der Baulücke am Rosenthaler Platz gab, die für die Ecke Brunnenstraße/ Weinbergsweg lange Zeit so charakteristisch war. Das erste Mal, dass mir dieses Phänomen auffiel, war im Frühling 2005, während meines ersten Besuchs in Berlin. Als ich 2006 nach Berlin zog, wohnte ich in einer WG in der Brunnenstraße, die nur ein paar Schritte von dieser Ecke entfernt war.
Ich beobachtete die vielfältigen und häufigen Veränderungen dieses kleinen eigenartigen Kosmos, in der sich ebenso, permanent verändernden Mitte Berlins. Ein Kosmos, der sich beständig neu definierte, seine eigene Geographie entwickelte und in seinem permanenten Wandel ein Symbol für die Vorläufigkeit und Unbeständigkeit darstellte, die für Großstädte wie Berlin so typisch ist. Diese Ecke, die zusammengesetzt war, aus den verschiedensten Aktivitäten der Imbissbetreiber_innen, Schmutz, Ratten, so kitschigen wie anziehenden Leuchtreklamen und vor allem billigem aber gutem Essen bei 24 Stunden Service, war der Ort, der dir jederzeit alles bieten konnte was du brauchst. Ein Mikrokosmos, in dem sich so gegensätzlich entwickelnden Bezirk Mitte.
Ein Miniatur-Bezirk mit seinen ganz speziellen Charakteren und einem eigenen sozialen Netzwerk, das sich zwischen den Anwohnern und den wechselnden Imbissbetreiber_innen entwickelte, und in dem Touristen nur eine Statistenrolle spielten. Der „Rosy“ vermischten sich die Geschichten der Imbiss-Leute und der Anwohner und damit die unterschiedlichsten Lebensstile und Perspektiven.
Die Imbiss-Kolonie am Rosenthaler Platz markierte eine Grenze zwischen der neuen unternehmerisch erschlossenen Mitte und dem kleinen Rest dessen, was ganz Mitte lange Zeit nach dem Mauerfall war: Chaos und Improvisation.
Ab 2008 begann die langsame Räumung der Baulücke. Die Imbisswagen wurden geschlossen und abtransportiert oder als Sperrmüll entsorgt. Einige Wochen blieb die Imbisskolonie sich selbst überlassen und wirkte wie eine Geisterstadt, bevor sie endgültig dem Neubau eines Hotels weichen musste.
